Designed to examine practice, not just paperwork
Written policies are important, but they do not show whether governance is understood or followed. The review considers how decisions are made in practice: who can introduce an AI tool, how use cases are approved, what evidence is retained, when human intervention is required and how concerns are escalated.
This helps distinguish controls that are working from those that exist only on paper, while also identifying useful practices that may already be happening informally and should be made consistent.
A proportionate route to stronger governance
The purpose of the review is not to create unnecessary process. Recommendations are shaped around the organisation’s size, operating environment, AI exposure and existing governance capabilities.
Priorities may include clarifying ownership, creating an AI inventory, strengthening supplier review, defining approval thresholds, improving records, introducing risk classification or making human oversight and escalation requirements more explicit.
